Television

the television is one of the most important of american culture because a child spends most of their time on the television so the child would get most of their knowledge of symbols from the tv.

Another symbol of america that has recently developed is fast food in general. Americans lead such busy lives that they do not have the time to cook a good healthy dinner for themselves and have to resort to some kind of fast food.

Sports teams in general is another major part of American society. Their are sports teams that represent each state, and even each counties within the state.

Though this symbol is automatically understood it carries one of the most important meanings in our culture.

Even the most simplest colors carries a meaning in American culture. Most of the time the color represents some sort of danger. Their was study done by a university to see if police officers were more likely to pullover cars just because they were red.

Society

All of a sudden I found myself thinking sociology when my parents were telling me stories of when they first came to United States of America.  When they first came they did not understand any English at all and during high school were placed in English as a second language classes. They found the culture to be odd because everyone operated differently than they did. Some aspects of American culture they found weird was that both boys and girls went to the same school. In India boys and girls went to different schools all the way until college, in their time at least.

My mother told me that the way she learned English and some parts of American culture was watching cartoons in her free time. I can not believe that from such a young age we are taught societies rule with even knowing that it is happening. This makes me wonder if children of a given society would know that society's rule with out even interacting with the society? For the most part it worked in our simulation with the heelots and hokies so it should work any way.

Bemused in America

1.Lost In Translation
The topic Stefan examined was the use of idioms and how the English language has over 250,000 different idioms.

2. Stefan finds it strange that a group of words put together can have a different meaning than they are individually. He wonders why Americans can not say what they mean and not use short phrases. He believes that due to the mix of Russian and American culture hybrid terms are made that are neither American or Russian  such as Handies which means a cell phone in Russia.

3. In Russian culture it is customary to say everything just as the mean so when the new Russian immigrants come to the United States of America they often get confused when someone says that so and so passed away.  They take it literally as some one has gone out and will return later only to find out it means that they have died.

4. Some American Values that I can relate to in this article is when I was young and my parents had just emigrated from India. Overall they could speak English fine but i had to teach them some pronunciations and other idioms. They would always mix up the order of verbs and nouns in a sentence.

sociology in the real world

All of a sudden, I found myself thinking sociologically when I sitting in commons today. In commons there are many places to sit and that lead us make a table of our own. Today was the also the last day to buy your parking passes. Since their are a lot of people sitting at our table we had combined two tables to make one big table. then half of us left to get our parking passes. The rest of the people at our table moved the tables apart and kept the single table.

This represents the need for society to be influenced by one another. If half of the kids did not get up to get our parking passes the rest of the people would not have moved the table. This theory of everybody depends on everyone else is directly related to Emile Durkheim. He said that society would depends on everyone else around them through a theory known as Organic Solidarity. That is why my friends moved the tables at the end when half of us left to get our parking permits.
