Society

All of a sudden I found myself thinking sociology when my parents were telling me stories of when they first came to United States of America.  When they first came they did not understand any English at all and during high school were placed in English as a second language classes. They found the culture to be odd because everyone operated differently than they did. Some aspects of American culture they found weird was that both boys and girls went to the same school. In India boys and girls went to different schools all the way until college, in their time at least.

My mother told me that the way she learned English and some parts of American culture was watching cartoons in her free time. I can not believe that from such a young age we are taught societies rule with even knowing that it is happening. This makes me wonder if children of a given society would know that society's rule with out even interacting with the society? For the most part it worked in our simulation with the heelots and hokies so it should work any way.

  1. Makes you wonder what rules about American society are taught when watching children's cartoons! Our culture unit will give you a new way to think about the experiences of your parents as they came to the US.
