Bemused in America

1.Lost In Translation
The topic Stefan examined was the use of idioms and how the English language has over 250,000 different idioms.

2. Stefan finds it strange that a group of words put together can have a different meaning than they are individually. He wonders why Americans can not say what they mean and not use short phrases. He believes that due to the mix of Russian and American culture hybrid terms are made that are neither American or Russian  such as Handies which means a cell phone in Russia.

3. In Russian culture it is customary to say everything just as the mean so when the new Russian immigrants come to the United States of America they often get confused when someone says that so and so passed away.  They take it literally as some one has gone out and will return later only to find out it means that they have died.

4. Some American Values that I can relate to in this article is when I was young and my parents had just emigrated from India. Overall they could speak English fine but i had to teach them some pronunciations and other idioms. They would always mix up the order of verbs and nouns in a sentence.

  1. Great personal connections! How can they apply to America as a whole?
